WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Veteran 406mtsports.com and Billings Gazette sports writer Greg Rachac is the National Sports Media Association's Montana Sportswriter of the Year for the third time.

The award was announced Tuesday. Rachac also won in 2011 and 2014.

Rachac, who is based in Bozeman, covers Montana State University athletics for 406mtsports.com and Lee Enterprises newspapers in Billings, Missoula, Helena and Butte.

A Colorado native who was raised in Billings, Rachac began working in The Gazette's sports department shortly before graduating from Billings Central in 1997. The MSU Billings alum started covering a combined Montana-MSU beat in 2004 and moved exclusively to the Bobcats in 2015 for 406mtsports.com.

"This award is well-deserved," said Jeff Welsch, 406mtsports.com editor. "In two years, Greg has taken coverage of MSU athletics to another level for our readers. And a statewide honor is fitting given that Greg's work reaches Bobcat backers in literally every community in Montana."

Montana State football and men's basketball play by play voice Jay Sanderson was named NSMA Montana Sportscaster of the Year.

Rachac and Sanderson will be recognized during the 59th annual NSMA awards weekend June 23-25 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
