FREEPORT, Ill. — Miles Community College earned a spot in the NJCAA Division I women's basketball national tournament on Saturday by defeating host Highland Community College 86-59 in the District D championship game.
The Pioneers, 33-0 and ranked 17th nationally, are now bound for the national tournament March 18-23 at Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.
Against Highland, the MCC women jumped ahead 31-10 in the first quarter.
The Pioneers, who scored 42 points off 14 3-pointers en route to victory, led 50-29 at halftime before going on another 28-9 blitz during the third quarter.
Patrycja Jaworska led MCC with 15 points and four assists. Teammates Dakota Dosch, Josselin Geer and Kylee Meredith added 12 points apiece. Lucia Salazar contributed 10 points and eight rebounds.
Bre Moea'i chipped in with eight rebounds and four assists. Dosch gathered five steals.
The Pioneer defense forced 32 turnovers by the Cougars and MCC tallied 31 points off of those takeaways.
Miles will find out where it is seeded and who it will play in the opening round at nationals on Monday during the NJCAA Selection Show, which is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
MCC will host a watch party beginning at 9 a.m. in Kailey Gymnasium. Admission is free.
