CEDAR CITY, Utah — Fast starts were the order of the day for the Montana softball team, which swept a doubleheader from Southern Utah to run its winning streak to seven games.
The Griz scored six in the first two innings of the opener and held on for a 6-4 win, then plated eight runs in the first inning of the nightcap, a 15-7 win.
The Griz improved to 9-8 in Big Sky games, 23-29 overall. They wrap up the regular season with a single game Sunday against the T-birds.
Colleen Driscoll started and pitched the first 3-plus innings of the opener. Tristin Achenbach finished to earn her sixth win.
Lexi Knauss tripled and drove in a run in Montana's four-run first inning. She scored on Cami Sellers' single, then Morgan Johnson capped off the rally with a two-run homer, her fourth in the last 10 games. The Griz added two in the second on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a fielder's choice from Maygen McGrath.
Montana's eight-run first in the nightcap saw Sellers drive in one run with her first single of the inning, then the final two runs of the frame with another single. Maddy Stensby added a two-run double. Johnson homered again in the nightcap, a two-run shot in the third inning that made it 11-0. Stensby added a two-run shot later in the inning to make it 13-0 and Sellers also hit a two-run homer.
Stensby (6-7) pitched the first three innings to get the win.
