BILLINGS — Satchel McDonald, Chad Kananen and Craig Wilmore each made two free throws in the final 44 seconds as Rocky Mountain College held off No. 10 Lewis-Clark State 86-80 Thursday night at the Fortin Center.
The Battlin' Bears (9-5, 1-2) host Montana Western on Saturday. Carroll beat the Bulldogs 77-63 in Helena. Rocky is 4-0 at home this season.
Jared Samuelson and Craig Wilmore led the Battlin' Bears with 19 points each, while Austin Payne had 12 and Danny Betcher 10. Samuelson also had nine rebounds, while Wilmore had eight.
The Warriors (13-2, 2-1) pulled within 80-77 on a basket from Cordel Hankerson with two minutes remaining. Kananen tapped a Rocky miss to McDonald who converted the two free throws.
"That was a huge hustle play," said Rocky coach Bill Dreikosen of Kananen's tap out. "He played 29 minutes and scored seven points but the stat sheet doesn't tell the story. The biggest play was that tap out."
McDonald also had five steals.
"I felt like we did a really good of of never panicking in the game," Dreikosen added. "I thought we had good energy on defense and great flow on offense."
Dana Abe of L-C State led all scorers with 20 points in his first game, while Race Martin had 16 and Darius Alexander 12.
