BILLINGS — Northwest Nazarene overcame a 27-point second-half deficit to score a 92-89 overtime victory against Montana State University Billings in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday.
MSUB opened up a 44-29 lead at the break before extending the lead to 27 points. However, the Nighthawks went on a 22-1 run midway through the second half, keyed by 3-point baskets on four straight possessions.
With the win, Northwest Nazarene (15-3, 10-2) moved into a tie for first place with Saint Martin's. MSUB (11-9, 6-6) remained in sixth place in the GNAC standings.
During the Nighthawks' 22-1 run they tied the game at 70-70 with 4:27 remaining. MSUB was held to one free throw over a stretch of 5:38.
In the last minute of regulation, Melvin Newbern Jr. made one of two free throws with 45 seconds remaining as MSUB gained a 80-77 lead. The Nighthawks' Sam Roth made a fadeaway 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining to knot the score and send the contest into overtime.
Jayden Bezzant ultimately hit a trey with 1:44 remaining in the extra-session to give Northwest Nazarene a seven-point lead.
Zharon Richmond pumped in 21 points and had seven rebounds to lead MSUB. Tyler Green and Zack Rollins both contributed 19 points. Newbern hauled down 15 boards.
Bezzant finished with a game-high 27 points.
