Butte High Luke Powers

Butte High head boys basketball coach Luke Powers resigned from the program on Tuesday following his fourth season with the Bulldogs.

BUTTE — Butte High boys basketball coach Luke Powers hung up his clipboard on Tuesday following his fourth season guiding the Bulldogs.

Powers said that the choice to resign was not an easy one, but being the father of a young daughter — as well as juggling the responsibilities of being a full time teacher and student — compelled him to realign his priorities.

"My priority in life has always been basketball," an emotional Powers told 406mtsports.com in a phone interview, shortly after notifying his assistant coaches and players that he was stepping down. "But having a 10-month-old daughter has changed things. The amount of time you have to put into it, I just had to weigh those priorities.

"My daughter deserves my time and my help and at the same time the basketball program deserves time. It was hard to weigh the two. It's just a tough decision and a tough day for me."

The Bulldogs' final season under Powers was defined by struggles. Butte earned its first conference win in the regular-season finale against Billings Senior, beating the Broncs 72-65 in double overtime. The Bulldogs then went 0-2 at the Eastern AA Divisional in Great Falls.

"I think we improved, we just couldn't get over the hump," Powers said. "But I think the future is bright for Butte High basketball."

Powers took the reins of the Bulldogs' program in 2015, following a three-coach carousel the previous four seasons. In 2012, Terry Hauser took over for Jim Konen. Hauser's tenure lasted two seasons before handing the team off to Chad Jonart, who led Butte for one season before Powers became coach.

Though he's taking a break from prowling the sidelines for now, Powers said that he can still see himself returning to coaching down the road.

"This isn't me hanging up coaching forever, just a change of pace for now," Powers said. "We'll see what the future brings."
