BILLINGS — Jack Leuthold of Billings Central and the Billings Aquatic Club has signed to swim collegiately at the University of Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin swimming and diving team made the announcement via Twitter on Friday, writing, ‘Welcome to the pack, Jack” above a picture of Leuthold wearing a Badgers sweatshirt. Leuthold confirmed the signing to 406mtsports.com.
Leuthold is currently competing at the state swimming meet in Bozeman, which began Friday. Leuthold is looking to help Billings Central to its third consecutive state title.
“It was in between Wisconsin and Ohio (State) when it came down to it," Leuthold said Friday after his races. "But Wisconsin, the coaching staff was better, the school I felt more opportunities so I mean I think just overall it was a better fit."
Leuthold plans to major in political science.
Last season, Leuthold won his second straight gold medal in the 500-yard freestyle event when he set the all-class state record with a time of 4:39.90. He also placed second in the 200 freestyle.
“I think I’m going to be mostly a distance swimmer so mile, mile-500 maybe, but I think the mile is probably going to be the main one," Leuthold said.
“I just became kind of of a distance swimmer in the past couple years, but yeah I kind of like it more and more."
And he's excited for future potential with this path.
"Their training group they have there is really cool and I got to spend a lot of time with them. I think just the environment of it is super good and somewhere I’ll be able to get better,” Leuthold said.
Leuthold won his first high school gold medal as a sophomore in 2017, also in the 500 freestyle. Leuthold had also placed third in the 50 freestyle and fourth in the 100 freestyle entering his senior season.
Leuthold has shined on the club circuit, as well. He placed fourth in the 1,600 freestyle at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals meet in Austin, Texas, in December.
