HELENA -- Competing against the 2017 Class AA state wrestling runners-up Bozeman High's mostly second string — except for a marquee match at 113 pounds — Helena's wrestling team edged the Hawks 42-34 on Tuesday in The Jungle.
The Hawks are ranked No. 2 in the AA, and have captured three invitational tournaments this season. But on Tuesday they basically brought their JV.
However, at 113, last year's state champion Isaac Romero of Helena, hooked up against vaunted Bozeman's Jaiden James, who placed second at last weekend's prestigious Beck Rocky Mountain Classic. Romero finished fourth in the Missoula tourney.
Romero led 4-2 after the first period, and 8-7 heading into the third. But then the Bengals matman scored a reversal and a pin at the 4:39 mark to put an exclamation point on the barn-burner. Romero improves to 25-3 with 13 pins.
"That was a great win for Isaac," Helena coach John Burke said.
Also collecting pins for the hosts were Devin Crawford at 138, Kaleb McKay at 145, Peter McIntosh at 160 and Jacob Manibusan at 182. Other Bengals winners were Austin Murphy at 126 and Nolan Baumgashens at 205.
Bozeman's victors were Bridger Wilkes (103), Hayden Innis (120), Ethan Favre (132), Will Romano (152), Bradden Bowler (170) and heavyweight Leighton Couture.
