BILLINGS — Chuck Aragon of Billings was recently selected for induction into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.
Aragon, a two-time All-American at Notre Dame, is part of a six-person class that will be inducted at the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame banquet in Albuquerque on April 7, 2019.
Aragon, an anesthesiologist in Billings, was an All-American for the Irish in the two-mile relay (1979) and in the 1,500 (1981).
According to an article in the Albuquerque Journal, Aragon was a five-time high school track and cross country champion at Los Lunas. A story on the Notre Dame website said Aragon was the first New Mexico native — and the first Irish runner — to break four minutes in the mile.
Aragon placed third in the 1,500 at the Pan Am Games in 1983. He also competed in the 1987 World Championships in the 1,500.
Aragon and his wife Kathy are the parents of former Billings Senior standout runners Alexa, Dani and Christina. Alexa and Dani were All-Americans at Notre Dame and Christina is a junior and runs for Stanford. She is a five-time All-American for Stanford.
