LOGAN, Utah — Harald Frey scored 34 points and hit six 3-pointers as Montana State gave No. 17 Utah State an upset scare Tuesday, but the Aggies pulled away late to claim an 81-73 victory.
The game was tied 66-66 with 4:20 remaining when Utah State went on an 8-0 run to claim the lead. The Bobcats didn’t score again until Ladan Ricketts made two free throws with 1:33 left.
The Aggies’ run was spurred by a Justin Bean dunk, a Diogo Brito layup and four free throws by Alphonso Anderson.
Frey, a senior from Oslo, Norway, scored 13 of his points in the first half. The Bobcats went into halftime trailing 37-34. The game marked Danny Sprinkle’s regular-season debut as MSU’s coach.
It was the sixth 30-point game of Frey’s career, moving him to second place all-time at MSU behind Tyler Hall, who scored 30 or more 15 times.
Jubrile Belo had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats while Mychael Paulo scored 10 before fouling out.
MSU returns home to play Rocky Mountain College on Saturday.
