Billings Central vs. Laurel

Laurel boys soccer coach Leroy VanderPool cheers on his team during a match against Billings Central at Wendy's Field on Rocky Mountain College's campus last season.

BILLINGS — Laurel boys soccer coach Leroy VanderPool has stepped down after six years with the program.

VanderPool, who helped guide the Locomotives to the Class A championship match this season, said in a text to 406mtsports.com that he turned in his resignation earlier this month. VanderPool traveled a lot between Laurel and Bozeman, where he has business dealings, during the season, and is moving full time to Bozeman with his family.

In his text, VanderPool thanked the Laurel school district, administrators and the high school and youth soccer coaches he worked with through the years.

“I was thankful to have solid young men to coach,” he wrote. “With a little tactical set up and a strong community, I feel I was able to accomplish a lot in Laurel.”

The Locomotives' appearance in the state title match was their first in program history. Whitefish defeated the Locomotives, 4-0.
