The National High School Coaches Association announced on Wednesday that Katharine Berkoff is the national senior girls swimming athlete of the year.
Berkoff, a senior at Missoula Hellgate, won 16 individual state championships during her high school swimming career and led the Knights to four team titles. She rewrote her own state records in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle as well. She never lost a race in her high school career.
Berkoff is ranked No. 14 in the world in the 100 backstroke and is gunning for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Berkoff is committed to swim in college at North Carolina State.
In December, Berkoff set a Speedo Junior Nationals meet record in the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. She also won the 100 freestyle and finished second in the 200 individual medley.
Berkoff is the first Montana high school swimmer to ever win the NHSCA national girls swimming athlete of the year award.
